Amazon Kindle DX (Review, Specs, Graphite)

Amazon Kindle DX is the true heir to the Kindle throne. In the meantime, bigger screen, cool new tricks. Amazon announced the Kindle DX on May 6, 2009. This device has a larger screen than the standard Kindle and supports simple PDF files. It was also the thinnest Kindle to date and offers an accelerometer, which enables the user to seamlessly rotate pages between landscape and portrait orientations when the Kindle DX is turned on its side.

Kindle DX International Version - When we reviewed the Kindle 2 almost a year ago, it was the only size available. But Amazon has released a much larger version to the UK called the Kindle DX. The major hardware difference between the Kindle 2 and the DX is, of course, the display, which at 246mm (9.7 inches) is as large as the entire Kindle 2 itself. With no backlight it requires an external light source, but the upside is a total lack of eyestrain and I had no issues reading from the DX for prolonged periods.

You can, as ever, choose from six font sizes and the levels of word count per line. As with the Kindle 2, the display supports 16 levels of grey scale, which is enough to provide high level of detail in photos and graphics. Amazon clearly agrees as the DX sports an accelerometer, which automatically flips pages on its side when held sideways - something that had to be done manually on the Kindle 2. The downside to the DX over the Kindle 2 is the increase in weight, which at 540g is a major leap over the Kindle 2's 290g and makes it a lot less pocketable.

Kindle DX Graphite - The second generation Kindle DX in graphite color. Amazon released a new revision of the Kindle DX "Graphite" (3rd Generation Kindle DX) On July 1, 2010. the new Kindle DX has an E Ink display with 50% better contrast ratio (due to new E Ink Pearl technology) and comes only in a "graphite" case color. The DX Graphite (DXG) is generally accepted to be of the 3rd generation, yet it is a mix of 3rd generation hardware and 2nd generation software. The CPU is of the same speed as Kindle 3 but it is of a different revision.

Even though DX Graphite has a larger case, it has only a half the system memory (128MB) of the Kindle 3 (256MB). Due to these hardware differences, DXG runs the same firmware as Kindle 2 (currently at version 2.5.8). Therefore, DXG cannot display international fonts such as the Cyrillic font (Chinese or any other non-Latin font), PDF and the web browser are limited to Kindle 2 features.
